Snails and Slugs

So what are slugs and snails, well there are mollusks, like clams, mussels and oysters. They are also gastropods, which mean the foot located on the stomach is how they get around. They are rather similar, except that the slug doesn’t have a shell to protect it from dry conditions and the sun. Both have soft unsegmented bodies with one or two pairs of tentacles on their heads. The front tentacles are for detecting odours and taste, while the larger back tentacles have an eye at the end. Another interesting quality is that they have both male and female organs, therefore slugs and snails are hermaphrodites. They eat up to a half of their body weight each day, munching on seedlings, roots, tubers, and plants, leaving a sticky shiny mess. To help prevent a gastropod invasion, remove all rotting vegetables, bricks, boards, and mounds of rubbish that are in contact with the soil.
