In mating season, females will build several nests called dreys, so they always have a back-up nest if one is damaged and for insect control and predator evasion. Female squirrels typically give birth to two to eight offspring. Mothers may have several litters in a year, so most squirrel populations are robust. After she is mated, there is a gestation period of approximately 45 days, about the size of your thumb, are born. Baby squirrels called kittens, open there eyes open at four weeks, are weaned and ready to be on their own at 10 weeks of age. They are intelligent, curious, agile, and environmentally valuable but they can be can be destructive, annoying pests.
