Sugar Ants in the Kitchen: Why They Keep Coming Back
Sugar ants keep coming back because the colony lives outside your kitchen, usually in a wall, under flooring or in the soil beside the house. Wiping up the trail or spraying the ants you can see doesn't touch the nest. To stop them, you need to cut off what they're feeding on, close the way in and deal with the colony itself.
What Are Sugar Ants?
"Sugar ant" isn't one species. In the Lower Mainland, it usually means the odorous house ant: a tiny dark brown or black ant, about 3 mm long, that travels in busy lines toward anything sweet. Crush one and you'll notice a sweet, slightly rotten smell. They're a nuisance rather than a structural threat, unlike the large carpenter ants covered on our ant control page.
Why Sprays Don't Solve the Problem
A colony of odorous house ants can have many queens and thousands of workers. The ants on your counter are a small share of the total. Spray kills them, but the colony simply sends more. Some sprays also stress the colony into splitting, so one nest becomes several, often in new parts of the house.
Where They Get In
Gaps around kitchen windows and window frames
Where pipes and cables go through the wall under the sink
Along baseboards and the edge of the countertop backsplash
Cracks in the foundation or around the patio door
What You Can Do Yourself
Follow the trail back as far as you can. Where it disappears into a gap is the entry point. Wipe the trail with soapy water to remove the scent they follow, then seal the gap with caulking.
Keep sugar, honey, syrup and pet food in sealed containers. Rinse recycling, wipe counters at night and fix any drips under the sink, because these ants need water as much as food. Outside, trim plants and mulch back from the foundation so they can't use them as a bridge to the house.
When to Call a Professional
Call if the ants are back within a few days of cleaning, if you see them in more than one room, or if they return every spring. That usually means an established colony in the walls or under the house. A professional treatment targets the colony so the whole nest is dealt with, not only the ants you see.
Sugar Ants in Ladner and Tsawwassen
Odorous house ants become active in South Delta as the ground warms in March and April. After heavy rain, they often move indoors looking for dry, warm spots, which is why many homeowners first notice them after a wet spell. We serve all of Ladner, Tsawwassen and South Delta.
FAQ

Do home remedies like vinegar work?
Vinegar removes the scent trail for a while, but it doesn't reach the nest, so the ants return.
Why are there winged ants in my house?
Winged ants indoors can mean a different problem. Read Flying Ants: Harmless Swarm or Carpenter Ants?
