European Wasps

Wasps Traps

SnipImage

80 European wasp nests have been destroyed over the past six months to prevent the pest from becoming established in the state of Washington just, below British Columbia. When a wasp is caught in a trap and confirmed to be a European wasp, the Department then locates and destroys the nest. European wasps are targeted by the Department because of the threat they pose to agriculture and food sector. The wasp has the potential to impact on our valuable viticulture, apiculture and horticulture industries, and they also pose a risk to our outdoor lifestyle, tourism and human health. European wasps start to become active with the onset of warmer weather in October to November.    wasps wasps     Go Green Pest Control     Delta pest control    tsawwassen pest control    ladner pest control

A new tool in my pest arsonal

Chinese army uses FLAMETHROWER to take out giant nest of killer wasps

What do you do when you find a hornets’ nest high up in a tree? Call in the army to KILL IT WITH FIRE.

At least that’s the pest control solution used in China with when villagers found the hive of aggressive stinging insects.

The giant wasps had already stung one man to death and were attacking any residents that came close to the tree carrying the nest.

At 30 metres off the ground and 1.5 metres in diameter, the giant nest was extremely tricky to destroy using conventional insecticides.

Once it had been assessed by the fire brigade and deemed too dangerous, a battalion from the People’s Liberation Army was summoned.

Wearing chemical warfare suits, the soldiers lined up a terrifying flamethrower to send a jet of fire to incinerate the offending nest.

Sex chemicals confuse males?

 SnipImage

Pheromones offer green alternative to pesticide sprays

Sex chemicals confuse male insects into looking for love in all the wrong places. Each pheromone only targets a single pest species. That leaves beneficial pollinators like bees and predators such as ladybugs unharmed.  Some farmers are now turning to the green alternative of pheromones, the alluring chemicals female insects use to attract males. By spraying pheromones into the air in orchards and vineyards, farmers can confuse male insects into thinking that females are calling from all directions. The males go looking for love in all the wrong places, while the females wait helplessly. Pheromones have a number of advantages. Insecticides don’t just kill pests, but also beneficial insects such as pollinators and pest-eating predators. Pheromones, on the other hand, are precisely targeted, because each insect species has its own chemically distinct pheromone.  A given pheromone can target just the single insect species that’s causing damage while in no shape or form affecting any other moth around or any other insect for that matter: nor do pheromones affect any other organisms, including humans. They can be used by both organic and conventional growers. The technology be completely mainstream in the next five or six years.     Go Green Pest Control    Tsawwassen Pest Control   Ladner Pest Control    Delta Pest Control   Randy Bilesky   males  males   males  males

Detergents and pesticides and boys

Study finds detergents and pesticides linked to genital defects in baby boys

SnipImage

Pregnant women regularly exposed to a range of detergents, solvents and pesticides have a substantially greater risk of giving birth to boys with genital deformities. Women who regularly work with such chemicals, including cleaners and hairdressers, were at greatest risk of giving birth to sons suffering from hypospadias.

A study showed that regular professional or domestic exposure to chemicals and more generally being in contact with them seriously raises the risk of genital deformity. Boys were three times more likely to be born with hypospadias if they had been exposed to chemicals that interfered with their endocrine systems in the womb at the moment when the sex of the fetus is determined. Mothers working as cleaners or housekeepers, hairdressers, beauticians and laboratory workers are particularly at risk. For the father, being a farmer, lab worker, cleaner, mechanic or painter was found to bring a greater chance of the son having the defect. As well, living within 3 km of an incinerator or landfill brings a greater risk of having a son with hypospadias.     pesticides pesticides pesticides pesticides  Go Green Pest Control   Randy Bilesky   Delta Pest Control   Tsawwassen Pest Control   Ladner Pest Control

Impressive Fire Ant Spreads To Delta

SnipImage

There is no known method for eliminating the “Impressive Fire Ants” once they are established.  Fire ants are spreading in the Lower Mainland as call goes up for legislation to prevent movement of soil that is infested. Attempts to eradicate impressive fire ants with pesticides have failed, they come back stronger than ever from pesticides. Though tiny, fire ants swarm quickly when disturbed and deliver a painful sting. They prefer warm, moist locations and spread densely around patio stones and yard structures, with up to four nests per square metre.   Where the Impressive Fire Ant has been established, the movement of soil out of the area is going to greatly increase the chance of spreading this ant. Potted landscaping plants, soil for lawns and gardens as well as soil excavated from building sites are likely how the insects are spreading in B.C.  Digging up nests during the winter months when the ants are inactive allows the entire colony to be removed and then killed in a deep freeze.  When they are dormant, the ants all cluster up into a fist shape, so we were able to locate nests and dig them up. During the summer, the Impressive Fire Ants burrow and scramble away with egg masses very quickly when disturbed. The best defence against fire ants is to ensure your yard does not become infested in the first place.

Widespread infestations could also render parks unusable to locals and tourists. The ants are entrenched in a variety of residential neighbourhoods, from North Vancouver Deep Cove Park, Richmond’s McDonald Beach Park, South Burnaby, Victoria, Oak Bay, Courtenay, North Delta, Maple Ridge and Chilliwack.

Hmmmm…Human Rat Arms

Scientists have grown an entire rat arm in the laboratory for the first time.

SnipImage

The incredible lab-grown rat forearm limb has blood vessels, muscle tissue, skin and it even moves. This involves taking organs from donors and stripping all the soft tissue away, leaving just the collagen scaffold. They even attached the lab-grown arms to healthy rats and saw that the blood from the animal circulated around the new limb. The biolimb could eventually replace alternative bionic  limbs in human.

Optimum Fly Control

Seeing large numbers of flies requires applying summer insecticides. Last winter was relatively typical in that there was unexceptional snowfall and warmer temperatures. This means the peak fly season could be earlier with greater numbers of flies around all summer long.

SnipImage

The one thing that all fly species have in common is that they all have to survive the winter in one form or another. The number of individuals surviving the winter forms the breeding population for the subsequent spring and summer. And with the relatively mild winter we have just had it’s likely that many overwintering fly species will have persisted quite well.Pre-empting the fly threat this summer will help reduce fly-borne disease problems later in the season such as summer mastitis. Adult flies emerge in early June and lay eggs from July onwards. The larval stage then acts as an adult reservoir, so if you can reduce the number of adults before they start laying eggs there will be lower fly numbers for the following year. The males emerge first, followed by the females – so having a professional spray insecticides early enough should take out a large proportion of the local male population in any year.   Go Green Pest Control    Tsawwassen Pest Control   Ladner Pest Control  Delta Pest Control   Randy Bilesky

Bugs in your House

Facts you may not know about the bugs living in your home: mice, rats, wasps, bees, dust mites and silverfish. bugs

.

Rodents – Mice & Rats

Found in lofts (causing fire hazards by chewing electric cables) and kitchens (where they’ll eat virtually anything that’s on offer, especially dry cereal), telltale signs include droppings, scratching noises and sometimes a musty smell. Look out for holes and gaps where they can squeeze their way into your home (both mice and rats can get through any hole the size of a pen) and get them blocked up. bugs

Dust Mites

SnipImage

Transparent and less than half a millimetre long feed on a diet of dry and dead skin: coming out at night and causing allergic reactions in about 20% of the population, dust mites are known to cause eczema and asthma. There’s no way to get rid of them completely, but you could try replacing your pillows (a two-year-old pillow is made up of 10% dead mites and their droppings) and wooden or vinyl floors are better than carpets.

Other tips include opening windows when cleaning, dusting surfaces with a damp duster and washing bed linen on as hot a temperature as possible.

Bed Bugs

bedbugs

A reddish-brown and flattened bug, they feast on blood while you sleep. A barbed spike enters the skin’s surface gorging on blood for 10-15 minutes. Then the bed bug crawls away to a hiding place to digest the meal for the next several days while you’re left with itchy, whitish bite marks. Look for blood spots, black specks of dried faeces and shed shells on your mattress.

Silverfish

silverfish

Found in dark, damp places, such as the basement, loft or bathroom, and they on shampoo, linen, paper and dead insects. Silverfish do not bite or sting, and they are not harmful to human or pet health and safety at any time. However, silverfish cause damage to food in pantries, clothing, wallpaper and books.

Wasps

SnipImage

Wasps build their nests in building soffits, lofts, garages and wall cavities. Wasps will defend their nest by repeatedly stinging the intruder. They can build nests the size of a large water cooler. The majority of people without sting allergies will show only minor symptoms during and after a wasp sting. Usually, the pain and swelling recedes within a few hours of being stung. Stronger symptoms associated with a wasp sting are considered a be “large local reaction” such as anaphylactic shock, over-the-counter antihistamine medication can be used to reduce the discomfort.

Honey and Mason Bees

SnipImage

Bees are a valuable part of our ecosystem and should only be relocated by professionals. Mason bees tend to make their home in holes or crevices in walls positioned in sunny places.  Go Green Pest Control  Delta Pest Control  Tsawwassen Pest Control  Ladner Pest Control  Randy Bilesky

Household pesticides and ADHD

 SnipImage

A study shows commonly used household pesticide with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children and young teens. This is why the government is trying to stop the sale of pesticides to the public. Pesticide exposure and ADHD, particularly in terms of hyperactivity and impulsivity, rather than inattentiveness is associated in boys more than girls.

Animal studies suggest a heightened vulnerability to the effects of pesticide exposure on hyperactivity, impulsivity and abnormalities in the dopamine system in male mice. Dopamine is a neurochemical in the brain thought to be involved in many activities, including those that govern ADHD. Wasp and Hornet Control

Why you should consider wasp and hornet control

Ad

Go Green Pest Control, located in Delta, B.C., has been keeping homes pest-free this spring. Let’s face it, wasps and hornets mean business. Getting stung by one is painful, and can even be fatal in some cases; and when they enter your home and build a nest, they pose a danger to everyone in your home, including children and pets.

Wasps and hornets are aggressive insects that will swarm anyone who disturbs or threatens their nests. Some breeds build their nests in trees, in the ground, or underground. This is dangerous, because they can accidentally be disturbed by children playing or through gardening. In your home, they can build nests in your walls, attic, or roof, which can cause damage to your property. Unlike bees, they eat food. Their preferred diet is other insects, but they will even consume human food, which is why they are often unwanted guests at your outdoor gatherings.

If you have wasps or hornets in your home, it’s important not to try to fix the problem yourself. Be sure to call in a professional pest control technician, such as Randy Bilesky at Go Green Pest Control.  A professional knows how to safely locate the site of the nest, and safely eradicate it from your premises.

If you have a problem with wasps or hornets, or need help with any other pest control needs, contact Go Green Pest Control, providing both residential and commercial pest control services.
