At Go Green Pest Control, we recently encountered a situation that perfectly illustrates why effective pest management is based on evidence—not assumptions.

A Rodent Problem… Or Was It?

For more than a year, one of our pest management programs raised an important question.

Why was all the bait gone every time the bait boxes were checked?

The logical conclusion was that rats or mice were feeding on it. After all, that’s exactly what the bait was designed to attract.

But something didn’t add up.

The level of bait consumption didn’t match the amount of rodent activity we were observing. Instead of making assumptions, we decided to investigate further.

The Trail Camera Told the Real Story

To determine exactly what was happening, we installed a trail camera to monitor the bait stations overnight.

The footage revealed an unexpected surprise.

Rather than rodents consuming most of the bait, cockroaches were visiting the bait stations night after night, feeding on the rodent bait and significantly reducing the amount available for the actual target pests.

The mystery had finally been solved.

Why Didn’t the Cockroaches Die?

Many people assume that any pest eating poison will be eliminated. In reality, different pests respond to different products.

Contrac® contains bromadiolone, an anticoagulant rodenticide specifically formulated to control rats and mice.

Cockroaches, however, have a completely different biology.

Unlike mammals, insects do not rely on the same vitamin K blood-clotting system that anticoagulant rodenticides disrupt. As a result, bromadiolone has little to no toxic effect on cockroaches.

Instead, the cockroaches simply consumed the bait as a food source, wasting valuable rodenticide while leaving less bait available for the rodents it was intended to control.

Why Monitoring Matters

This experience highlights one of the most important principles of Integrated Pest Management (IPM): make decisions based on evidence.

Without monitoring, it would have been easy to continue replacing bait and assume the rodent population was unusually active. Instead, a simple trail camera provided the information needed to understand the real problem and adjust the treatment strategy accordingly.

Professional pest management isn’t just about applying products. It’s about identifying the pest, understanding its behavior, and selecting the most effective solution.
