The second-largest rodents in the world, the beaver is only just smaller the guinea pig. The world’s largest beaver dam, located in Alberta, is 2,790 feet long was started around 1975. Although the dams can cause extreme flooding situations the net result also create fertile soils, mitigate the effects of drought, reduce evaporation, and filter the water.
Beaver habitat is riparian zone (the interface between land and a river or stream), and these vegetarians are good creators and maintainers of wetlands. The dam is made with mud, stones and timber. Once the dam is working they begin to hollow out their lodge living with: muskrats, frogs, insects, deer mice, fungus, and more. This sort of community hospitality is unique. Nocturnal animals, they live around water to avoid predators, staying underwater for up to fifteen minutes.
