As Halloween approach, we are seeing more insects invade our homes as they get out of the weather. Some are small and terrible, sending adults and children into a screaming fit or nightmare. Here are a few:
1. Twisted-wing parasite larvae eat their mother. When the babies are ready to come out, they eat their mother from the inside, bursting out of her brood canal.
2. Honey bees have hair on their eyeballs. The hairs help the bees to pick up more pollen and tell the direction of the wind.
3. A housefly regurgitates its stomach contents, and then eats them again. On a piece of bread they will vomit on it in order to soften it and when it becomes soft enough, they suck it all in.
4. Some caterpillars disguise themselves as bird poop. Birds are three times less likely to attack a hanging bird poop-looking caterpillar than a straight one.
5. A cockroach can live for weeks without its head. This is because cockroaches don’t need their brains to breathe or move.
6. Army ants are used to close wounds. They get army ants to bite both sides of the cut, holding the skin together.
7. Assassin bugs suck the insides of their prey. They stab their victim with their long straw-like mouth, injecting toxic saliva that turns the insides of the insect into liquid, allowing the assassin bug to gradually suck them out.
8. Termites eat their food twice as fast while heavy metal music is playing.
9. The praying mantis has one ear and is the only insect that can turn its head 360 degrees.
10. Humans, crows and ants are the only creatures that fight battles in formations.
