From a raccoon’s perspective, we humans make outstanding neighbors. When raccoons take advantage of the food and shelter we provide, they often get into trouble. Raccoons are an ever-present sight in Delta evening landscape. They have a malleability that allows them live in the wild, suburban setting too our urban jungles. Raccoons have the natural ability to find food and shelter when living very close to humans. Raccoons in the wild like to nest in small places, under tree stumps and tree cavities. In our city there is an unlimited amount of similar cavities that raccoons can take advantage of: garages, roofs, sheds, under decks etc. Raccoons have the ability to obtain their energy and nutrients from materials originating from plant and animal origin, or in other words, anything we leave outside from dog food to kitchen garbage. Raccoons will eat everything that hits the ground; apples, nuts, bird seed, insects, rodents and assorted bits from the compost. This living with us and are environment doesn’t make them any tamer, in fact; they become less frightened, more aggressive and when push comes to shove, give us a disease or two. There are simple steps to discouraging raccoons from hanging out in your yard, take away any source of food and shelter.
