It’s the time of year when reports of raccoons wreaking havoc is on the rise. Raccoons are nocturnal mammals common throughout the lower mainland. These clever creatures have nimble hands and are intelligent problem solvers capable of opening latches, turning doorknobs, climbing, swimming, running at speeds of over 16 kilometers per hour and will remember how they got out of sticky situations in the past. The animals are more noticeable this time of year because they are on the move looking for somewhere it’s cozy and warm. With raccoons seeking warmth, now is the time to make sure your homes are sealed up, such as chimney caps, attic vent covers and loss soffit materials. Raccoons will also go after pet food left outside, as well as birdseed. Raccoons are known for carrying communicable diseases like rabies.
