Ants most commonly found in Delta are not hostile, although some can bite and sting. Our ants can range in colour from black to brown, red, yellow, or a mixture of them all. Ants sizes range from the Pharaoh’s ant of 1 mm to as large as the Carpenter ant of 13 mm. The can be beneficial in our gardens as they aerate the soil and eat other insects that we find more destructive. The species of ants that enter our homes include the carpenter ant, the thatching ant, the odorous ant, the pavement ant, and the pharaoh’s ant. Of all these ants, the carpenter ant is the only destructive ant, the pharaoh’s ant stings and the others are merely just a nuisance. Ant colonies send out the elderly scouts to search for water and foods containing starches, carbohydrates and oils. The scouts leave pheromone trails to help lead other workers to the food source. The easiest way to avoid an ant infestation is to remove any access to food and water. Physical barriers include repairing and sealing off cracks in the foundation and exterior walls. Next, try a few retail ant control products, if the problem doesn’t get resolved, call a professional.
