Humans have a constant dilemma, how do we allocate resources based on responsibilities and energy. It poses a problem for ants as well. It has been determined that ants understand work-life balance better than we do. In a colony of ants only a percentage of them actually work while the balance is inactive conserving food, energy, and resources. As the size of ant colony increases, the percentage of resting ants increases showing the importance of work-life balance and the need to efficiently use energy. Working ants consume five times more energy than resting ants. The percentage of the resting ant’s increases as the ant colony grows. Resting ants serve a backup role becoming activated when colonies need nest maintenance or defense. Large colonies of ants use less collective energy than small colonies. By not consuming energy, they are actually saving resources for the colony and making the colony more productive.
