Bats are one of the best at controlling insect populations by consuming hundreds of insects each night, but when they come into contact with humans, and then the problems may begin. Bats that live in social groups are probably the most troublesome type of bat infestation since there can be well over 25 bats in a colony and sometimes in the hundreds. When removing a bats habitat, they must be treated with respect, extreme caution and in a manner that does not harm the bats. Regardless if a colony is located in an attic or wall void, they create a mess, damaging materials with their droppings and leaving a pungent odor. Microbes in their droppings can cause respiratory disease. Bats also cause damage to structures by chewing building materials and enlarging their access holes. Their urine can cause damage to flooring, insulation, wood and can seep into ceilings of living areas. It is usually best to replace soiled material.
