Europeans believed that this insect would crawl into the ear canal of a sleeping person and bore into the brain. Although this is obviously untrue they can bite your skin to defend themselves. The earwig is actually a beneficial insect because it helps in the decomposition organic material and feeds on destructive insects. Earwigs like dark places that are moist such as under tree bark, beneath stones, cracks in foundations and under floorboards. These omnivorous insects use their cerci (clamping appendages on the rear) to grab their prey then bend backwards to eat them. Earwigs do feed on flowers, vegetables, ornamental trees, and shrubs eventually killing the plant. They have a gland that ejections a reeking yellow liquid as another means of defence. To rid your property of earwigs, remove decaying vegetation; eliminate areas that dark and moist where earwigs flourish.
