Fancy rats are specifically bred as pets where your regular street rat that you see in the garbage or a snap trap are considered wild vermin. Domesticated rats are physiologically and psychologically different from their wild relatives. Fancy rats have their origins as the targets for blood sport in 18th- and 19th-century Europe. Specially bred as pets since then, fancy rats now come in a wide variety of colours and coat types. Fancy rats are great if you live in an apartment because they are low maintenance and can even be trained to use a litter box. Fancy rats are happy in any size of home, they love to barbering, bruxing, boggling, scritching, popcorning, lordosis posture, and ear fluttering, as long as you have the proper enclosure, bedding, food and water. Fancy rats are friendly and can be taught to perform tricks for treats. But like most pets they require some form of stimulation, be it toys or hands on play time.
