Now that everyone is spending their evening indoors – rain- we are hearing more about people reacting to different things in their homes, from spiders to moth and everything else that moves. One insect over-looked is the house mite. These little creatures feed on skin shed by people during their sleep or everyday activities, pollen particles and pet dander. Because they are so small they don’t eat much. In fact, one gram of shed skin can feed thousands of mites. The problems caused by dust mites are that many people are allergic to them and these allergies are consistent throughout the year. Dust mites can be found in carpeting, curtains, fabric covered furniture, mattress, and pillows. Prevention tips include: a lot of vacuuming, preferably with a HEPA filter, keep the relative humidity in your house below 60-70 percent, encase mattresses and box springs in mite proof coverings or better yet upgrade to bedbugs covers (two birds with one stone), wash drapes frequently if possible and of course find a professional who has experience and success in dust mite control.
