In the U.S. the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is recommending new standards for pesticide applicators who apply “restricted use” pesticides, requiring: increased level of training, a minimum age of 18 for applicators, and basic literacy. Interestingly the general public in the U.S. can buy those same pesticides that are restricted for purchase here in Canada. The EPA estimates that these changes will save $80 million from fewer injuries. Beyond Pesticides – National Coalition Against the Misuse of Pesticides has found that nearly every pest problem can be adequately addressed through cultural, mechanical, structural practices. Beyond Pesticides is similar to the organization LEEDS (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is a set of rating systems for the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of green buildings, homes, and neighborhoods). Beyond Pesticides approach is to use biological products and least-toxic pesticides employed to address remaining issues.
