There’s no end in sight to the boom in Delta’s rat population. So far this year, rat call-outs have outstripped other critter complaints from last year by a large margin and this trend may just continue. Previous mild winters have been fueling Delta’s rat boom. Yet, this year the cold weather has the rats hunkering down, clinging to life and driving them indoors. It’s a matter of life and death; they’ve got to find shelter as rats don’t retain body heat very well. With Delta experiencing sub-zero temperatures so far this winter, the ground has become too hard for burrowing. And it’s too cold for rodents to nest in trees. They will nest in our engines, garages, attics, anywhere where they can find including barbecues which is another popular option for rodents. Composts are another big attraction for rats. If it’s made of plastic, it’s brittle, it will break and even if you’re only composting grass, it will produce heat and the rats will want to burrow in and live right in the grass and if you’re composting food waste, its food for the rats. These resilient animals will eat just about anything; from grass seed to fertilizer and plant bulbs to your pet’s nasty business, rats are happy to eat it if there’s nothing else around.
