With Raccoons in the news a lot lately, I thought I’d write a little safety blurb on them. Raccoons can be quite dangerous if they get too close. If a raccoon approaches you, make yourself appear larger: stand up, shout, and wave your arms. If he continues to approach, throw or spray water, or anything if needed. A raccoon that is aggressive, tame, disoriented or staggers may be sick with rabies or injured. Children should be warned against approaching raccoons and told to yell if a raccoon approaches too close, so that adults know they need assistance. Raccoons that are fed lose their fear of people and if they are then not fed, they may become aggressive, even biting or scratching. Raccoons can cause the spread of parasites and disease. And don’t forget the basics: keep garbage out of reach of raccoons, keep pets and their food indoors, keep compost secure and bury scraps deep in soil, clean-up well after barbequing and eliminate access to harborage.
