Ant antennae are their cell phones

SnipImage

Ants use their antennae to send and receive messages similar to a cell phone. The ants’ antennae are their chief sensory organs. Their antennae are used to communicate to let their family and enemies by using chemical signals on their antennae. The ants’ antennae act as ears designed to send and receive signals.  The bodies of ants are coated in cuticular hydrocarbons, CHCs, wax-like chemical compounds that protect insects from desiccation and aid in communication. Without their antennae the insect became unrecognizable to the rest of the colony. Different parts of the ants’ body can deliver different pieces of information. It is believed that these chemical signals are analyzed by the ants with a mixture of different signals.
