Baby Skunks

If the baby skunk or skunks are out of their burrow for extended periods of time on their own, it is likely they will be deserted and will become orphaned and worth trying to catch. Orphans that have been without their mother may have become cold and dehydration.  They should be warmed and then offered a rehydration solution like Pedialyte (sold in Drug stores). The Pedialyte should be heated to body temperature and offered every 2 hours for the first several feedings. The baby skunks should be feed esbilac powder. Esbilac is a puppy milk replacer, which you can purchase at a vet or pet store.  Human baby formulas, cow’s milk, and most pet products (except Esbilac) are not suitable and will likely cause sickness and death. Skunk kits often carry roundworm and may need to be de-wormed. Skunks are susceptible to distemper. My advice is to take the babies to Critter Care Wildlife Society at 481 – 216th Street Langley BC  (604) 530-2064 604-530-2054
