One of the creepiest side effects to the rains we’ve seen in the past couple days is the mounds of fire ants, sometimes floating mounds, which have become common in back yards since the rain saturated their underground homes. When their homes underground become saturated with rain, the ants come up to the surface and begin tormenting us. When the ground is saturated, the ants don’t want to drown, so they push up in the soil and that leads to the kind of pillowy, above ground mounds. And the more rain, the bigger the mounds are. We have some fire ant varieties that have multiple queens in the nest, so the density of the fire ant mounds can be really impressive. The best way to kill fire ants is with bait, if you spray liquid pesticides in the area, it just moves the ants someplace else.
