Honda and Toyota help make rodents happy

The unintended consequence of car manufactures going green makes them taste way too good! There are several systems in the new vehicles that can be damaged by rodents: electrical wiring harnesses, air conditioning and heating ducts, seat cushions, trunk and storage area carpeting and various fluid containers. Many composition materials that are eaten will contain: soy, rice husks, wood, sugars, vanilla, peanut oil and straw. Japanese vehicle manufactures are now sell rodent proofing materials – tape. The tape is sold with the intent that it be used to wrap around the wires under the hood to discourage the rodents. With the major scandals with Volkswagen emission cheating, the sales of Toyota Camry and Honda Accord have increased as people have shifted from Volkswagen products. So more Toyota and Honda’s are on the street and while these cars are relatively bullet proof, they are still being manufactured with soya based wire which rodents love.  Since the late 2000s many Japanese vehicles have been equipped with eco-friendly cables. Ground squirrels, mice and of course rats eat the wire insulation and chew through the wire to keep their teeth short.  Damage to these soya based vehicles can range from a couple hundred dollars to several thousand. Earlier this year, Honda and Toyota have had been issued federal class-action lawsuits.
