Is Organic really Organic?

Certified Organic means that the farmer doesn’t plant genetically modified crops and can only use a few approved kinds of chemicals and fertilizers but if it’s contaminated with unwanted pesticides from the adjacent field then you are getting certified organic produce laced with pesticide residue. When, not if, a crop duster passing close to an organic farm and the wind is blown onto the land shouldn’t there be a big asterisk on the authenticity of their organic crops. As organic farms grow, so does looming drift problem.

Canada uses nearly 110 million pounds (498,000 metric tonnes) of pesticides every year to protect their crops from weeds and insects. But sometimes those chemicals drift to neighboring property, which can ruin crops on organic farms. The organic industry is pushing for national regulations that prioritize drift investigations and stricter penalties for careless farms. As a result, organic farmers need to plant defensively to survive.
