Lawn Ants and You

Lawn ants are a nuisance to people who want to walk and play on their lawn. They are a bit of horror when their ant hills begin to pop up and someone’s foot is bitten. There are a few types of ants that are common in our lawns, nesting in spaces that have appropriate soil types and drainage, hiding rocks and suitable food supplies. The two main types of lawn ants are the pavement ants and thatching ants. Pavement ants are small, black and nest under rocks, pavers and sidewalks. These guys will enter your house through cracks and crevices in search of food. Thatching ants are similar to carpenter ants, but they nest in the soil rather than in wet or rotting wood. The ants vary in colour from red to black and mix of both. They hunt for food everywhere, from sidewalks to patios, lawns to gardens. And yes they do get indoors and once they find a source of food, crumbs, they will send in the troops. Their mound size can be as large as 40 centimeters in diameter. Thatching ants are known to farm mealybugs and aphids in order to keep a sufficient supply of honeydew around. Ant colonies can be killed by drenching the nest with a liquid insecticide, sprinkling granular bait products along sidewalk paths, pavement cracks, beside and around the mound. A more natural approach is to use a three percent solution of water and dish soap to make it safe to use around pets and children.
