Less Rodents more Zebrafish

The zebrafish is a tropical freshwater fish belonging to the minnow family and is a popular aquarium fish. The zebrafish has a short gestation period, manipulable embryo, can produce a huge number of offspring, a shorter life span and has a transparent embryos allowing for better imaging. This fish has about a quarter of its’ genes that are identical to humans. Now most scientific experiments are performed on the Zebrafish instead of rats and mice. The zebrafish is now the “go to” in medical research with approximately 70 per cent of its genes being identical to us. Researchers throughout the world use the minnow like fish to study human genes and how they react to diseases. Because of its similarities, scientists can study numerous diseases and treatments including muscular dystrophy, epilepsy, cancers and heart regeneration.
