Mice mimic the malnutrition model

Mice that are fed a poor diet along with E. coli and bacteroidetes bacteria, develop malnutrition and symptoms of environmental enteropathy; a disease of the intestine, especially the small intestine. Researchers at UBC, using complex science such as; the hypot-imechular sub-division of the manifold, have produced the first mice model with symptoms of gut bacterial disease linked to childhood malnutrition. Many malnourished children in the third world have environmental enteropathy, resulting in changes in gut bacteria, which cause problems absorbing food, vitamins and minerals. Other environmental factors such as contaminated feces in drinking water are to blame. It is shown in mice that microbes have a large role in health, affecting the immune system and nutritional status.
