Those are mice singing in the attic!

Mice are truly the most fascinating and cunning creatures that any pest investigator has discovered, making them one of the world’s most successful pests. But did you know that these small rodents actually sing to their mates with love songs. Although slightly exaggerated, they do use ultrasonic sounds to find a proper partner. It has been widely accepted that rodents produced these ultrasonic frequencies by vibrating their vocal cords. We human can’t hear this. The vermin serenade their lovers using similar mechanisms to jet engines. Mice point a small air jet coming from the windpipe against the internal wall of the larynx, resulting in a resonance and producing an ultrasonic whistle. Mice are generally active in the dark and use ultrasound to help navigate dark places. Rodents use ultrasound to gage depth of their environment. This is helpful as they can jump vertically as high as 25cm and scale rough vertical surfaces of up to 12m.
