I looked down yesterday at my arm as I felt a mild sting. A mosquito was extracting my blood for its food. Of course there was a stagnant pond a few feet away which I assumed the mosquito had arisen from. The most common way to prevent mosquitos is to eliminate breeding sites. Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water, as flowing water such as streams and creeks wash out eggs, larvae, and pupae. Any dish that can hold water for more than three days has the potential to help breed mosquitoes. If the container is something that you really want, such as bird baths, drain them of water weekly. Level up any ditches or holes that can hold water. Keep ponds and fountains clear of weeds, and make sure water is flowing or mixing to prevent egg laying and development. Keep well-trimmed and managed vegetation to stop resting sites for the adults. When outdoors use insect repellents and wear long sleeves and light-colour clothes.
