Muskrat Love

Muskrats are primarily nocturnal, but can be active during the day and are very sociable animals. They get their name from their likeness to stocky rats and from the musky odor created by their scent glands. Muskrats are aquodic animals that prefer marshes, where the water level stays constant. They find shelter in bank burrows and nests that they make. They have large, robust bodies, with dense fur that traps air underneath for insulation and buoyancy. Muskrats live in large family groups even though they fight amongst themselves. They paddle with their webbed rear feet and use their tails as a rudder. Muskrats have poor senses of sight, hearing, and smell but communicate by a secretion from their glands called musk and vocalizing with squeaks and squeals. These rodents are mainly vegetarians but are also meat eaters. Predators of the muskrat include raccoons, otters, coyotes, owls, minks, foxes, bears, and eagles. They can evade many predators by escaping into water where they can remain underwater for up to 15 minutes. Their average life span is 3 to 4 years.
