New – European Cherry Fruit Fly

There’s a new fruit fly in B.C., the Rhagoletis cerasi. The European cherry fruit fly is a significant pest of European cherries. It was here last summer and its also unclear how it made its way into Canada. The pattern on the wing of this fruit fly can be used to differentiate it from our native fruit flies. Causing similar orchard damage, control measures growers are already using for native cherry fruit flies are unclear if they will be effective against them. The pests life cycle and phenology (a branch of science dealing with the relations between climate and periodic biological phenomena) has not been studied yet. Unfortunately, theirs is not much for farmers to do but wait and see.
