Ladybugs are useful in controlling unwanted pests in home gardens and the agriculture industry. Predator and parasitoid insects, including the ladybug, play a major role in reducing pest damage by suppressing insect pests. Native species of predators and parasitoids, like the ladybug, contribute at least $4.5 billion annually to crop pest control. Farmers include native wildflowers in their field borders or set aside strips of native bunch grasses to serve as habitat refuges. Native wildflowers provide habitat for beneficial insects that can limit pests like bagworms and reduce the need for pesticide applications.
Pollinators are responsible for almost 85 percent of flowering plants around the world, allowing plants that are food or habitat for other wildlife to persist. Two-thirds of crops that produce fruits, vegetables, spices, nuts, seeds and livestock forage depend on them.
