The Pacific Dampwood Termite

It’s almost that time again when the bloom of the termites hits the skies. Yearly, to spread their colony, termites swarm and piles of discarded wings can be seen in the aftermath. There are three casts in these colonies: reproductives, soldiers and workers. The Pacific dampwood termite leaves large oval fecal pellets in the nest, whereas the Western subterranean termite does not. They live in moist and decaying wood, especially when in contact with the soil. The termite chews and digests wood creating galleries (tunnels) in the decaying wood. Termites can cause extensive damage in a buildings structure which may be unseen for many years. Termite infestations include swarms of termites inside the home and wood that is hollowed out with round holes in it. Because these termites require damp and decaying wood to live, remove or replace damaged and rotting wood inside and outside the home. Use treated lumber where there is contact with soil in gardens and borders. Termite control requires a comprehensive and integrated approach so don’t hesitate to consult with a pest control professional.
