Pest Control Ad Nauseam

If you listen to the radio at all, any station it seems, one of my pest control competitors has been advertising ad nauseam about preparing for the rodent invasion. Although we have several weeks of summer left, as the days grow shorter the four legged animals from mice to raccoons know that they need to get ready for falls wet and cooler weather. All these furry creatures would love to take shelter in warm dry spaces such as your attic, crawl space, walls, sheds and garage. Here are a few tips to prevent these unsolicited boarders from moving in this fall.

-The outdoor areas of your home can invite a rodent infestation. Remove all debris from your house and trim any overgrown plants and hedging. Firewood should be stored 18 inches above the ground and away from your home’s exterior.

– Baits and traps work well for mice and rats. Rodents generally don’t stray too far from their nests. If rodents have nested in your home, they will return to that area unless immediate action is taken.

– A clean home is a happy home, the best defense against rodents. Clean all food from your counters and floors to ensure you don’t attract these uninvited pests. Store all food in tight-fitting plastic or metal containers.

– Seal all entrances that rodents can potentially penetrate. Mice can squeeze through the diameter of your baby finger and rats through the diameter of your thumb. Be sure to treat spaces around vents, air ducts, and the foundation of your home, sealing them with silicon, latex, steel wool or cement.
