Silverfish are not picky

Silverfish consume dead leaves, dried meat and skin, seeds, book bindings, cereal, cornmeal, cotton, flour, glue, linen, paper, photographs, rayon and even their own dead. Starches are their particular favorites. Older, hardback books are an especial treat for silverfish because of the glue used in their binding. A silverfish is 8 to 20 millimeters long with a flat, tapered body. They are white to pearl in color and without wings.   Silverfish are nocturnal and like high humidity. That’s why you most often discover them in your bathtub or sink. Silverfish are exceptionally long-lived and can be around for years. Slow to grow, they also are slow to reproduce, and populations build up very slowly.

There are four non-chemical ways you can control silverfish. First eliminating areas of high humidity, this can significantly reduce their numbers. Second,  eliminate their habitats by sealing up cracks and crevices.  Third, remove their potential food supplies. Eliminate stacks of old magazines and newspapers. Fourth, clean around and behind appliances, countertops, cupboards, drawers and pantries. Also, clean beneath sinks in the kitchen and bathroom where dark, humid conditions exist. If these steps don’t help, call Go Green Pest Control and we will rid you of your silverfish issue in minutes.
