Ground beetles are beneficial insects that help to curb populations of pests and weeds. They are infrequent invaders, normally seen in the fall; they enter homes in the middle or end of summer. These beetles are attracted to light and are noticeable when they gather around well-lit buildings. When they infest a building the worse damage they may cause is panic, as they do not pose a health threat to people or damage property. Certain ground beetles release stinky odorous excretions. To help prevent an invasion, seal all cracks and crevices around the foundation of the building, keep mulch away from the building foundation, and use yellow light bulbs instead of white ones for outdoor lighting. Smaller infestations can be vacuumed but larger ones may require pesticides around the perimeter of the structure.
