Go organic, use less pesticide and plant flowers. These are the words used by researchers that have watched the decline of butterflies globally. More than 90 per cent of all plants need a pollinator to set fruit and seeds. Besides bees, butterflies play an important role as pollinator helping agriculture productivity especially in herbs and fruit trees. Degradation in habitat and over use of pesticides has led to a perilous reduction in the population of butterflies. Where have all the butterflies gone? Most of us just have to look to our own yards to see the lack of flowers that once grew in the grass and landscaping. Experts point to urban sprawl and industrial development reducing the diversity of flowers and grasslands, and the increase of air pollution. Without flowers, fruit trees and other types of plants, there is just not enough plant nectar for butterfly larva. Use of pesticides on farms adds to air pollution which is poison to butterflies and other valued organisms. Butterflies are one of the best monitored groups determining changes in the eco-systems due to global warming.
