Ants are efficient, sustainable, safe and pest controllers says British Ecological Society’s Journal of Applied Ecology.
Here is why they say that ants are special
- Ants exist on every continent, other than Antarctica, with 12,000 species of ants worldwide.
- Ants are really good predators. They can lift up to 20 times its’ own body weight. Ants eat worms, spiders and insects that destroy our crops. When ants are hunting, they do so in groups to take down much larger prey.
- Ants help change the physical, chemical and biotic properties of the soil and help species all along the food chain.
By using ants to control pests, reports show that farmers can benefit in various ways:
– Cashew yields 49% higher in plots controlled by ants over those controlled with pesticides and the cashews free of traditional chemicals yielded 71% higher income.
– Farmers using ants on mango crops had a 73% higher income.
