The Vancouver ban on neonicotinoids will come into effect on July 26. is a group of pesticides that is believed to contribute to bee mortality. Neonicotinoids were developed in the early 1990s as a safer alternative to DDT, but they kill bees by dropping their resistance to infection and waning their ability to reproduce. They are widely used on fruit crops in the Fraser Valley and the Okanagan. There is almost a 40% loss in honey bee population every winter in B.C. Other contributing factors including loss of habitat and mites but neonicotinoids cause impaired memory and less success in breeding, to reduced resistance to illness. Ontario is reducing the use of neonics on corn and soybean crops by 80 per cent. France and other countries in the EU have chosen to heavily restrict use.
