Carabid Beetles a.k.a. the ground beetle

There are over 800 species of ground beetles in Canada. They can be found on the ground under logs, rocks, wood, leaves, boards, and other debris preying on ants, aphids, caterpillars, maggots, slugs, and worms. Although beneficial to the environment, these beetles can infest buildings in large numbers yet only reproduce outdoors.  When these nocturnal pests move indoors, they can be found in dank basement areas. Most ground beetles are nocturnal creatures that remain hidden during the day. Although they invade buildings from time to time, ground beetles. Some ground beetles will eat seeds, shoots, and pollen of plants eating four times their own body weight. These beetles enter buildings through cracks, crevices, and other small openings. Repairing and sealing entry points and keeping mulch away from the building foundation can help eliminate infestations. Large infestations may require insecticides sprayed around the foundation of the building.
