Coyotes – the American Jackal

Coyotes are crepuscular, most active at dawn and dusk, although they can be seen during the day as well. They are omnivores so they eat small mammals, pets’ food, insects and fruits and berries. They’ll rid your yard of rodents but coyotes don’t have a bias when it comes to small animals, so smaller dogs and cats are at risk. Coyotes usually can exploit any environment to find food, water, lodging and space. Coyotes in Delta can be found in rural and urban settings and are a part of the ecosystem. Coyotes are sleek animals, usually light grey or brown in color. Due to their size and coloring they can be mistaken for a family dog. Coyotes were originally a prairie animal that has extended its range westward.  To help reduce any conflicts with coyotes here are a few suggestions: do not feed them, keep all garbage secure, ensure your compost is working properly, pick up all fruit, remove dense landscaping or low branches in your yards, remove bird feeders, install motion activated lights or sprinklers, keep cats indoors, do not feed pets outside but if you must, clean up any pet food immediately after feeding.
