Cottontail Rabbits

The most commonly encountered species is the cottontail rabbit. A female rabbit is called a doe, a male rabbit is called a buck and a young rabbit is called a kit (or kitten). Rabbit’s lifespan is on average 10 years. Rabbits are small, furry individuals that are ravenous plant eaters and classified as herbivores. They are opportunistic feeders causing damage to gardens and ornamental plantings. They can cause damage to gardens, landscaping, trees, berry plants, fruits, bushes and grasses. Preferred meals include beans, carrots, lettuce, peas, beets, bark, cherries, blackberries, strawberries and raspberries. Rabbits also can transmit tularemia. Controlling rabbits is an uncomplicated process and usually involves habitat removal and relocation.
