Earwigs not ear worms

There is a fallacy that earwigs tunnel into your ears while you sleep, well they’re earworms not earwigs that do that. Earwigs have pincers on the back of their abdomens that are pretty scary, but they use them for defense and for fighting with competitor earwigs. Earwigs are active at night eating plants and insects. Because earwigs are attracted to light they can become an annoyance on porches and patios on summer evenings. In the house, they can be found where there is water; kitchens, bathrooms, and laundries or almost every part of the house. To control earwigs you need to eliminate their hiding places. A dehumidifier might help in a damp basement. Create a dry zone of 15 to 30 cm next to the foundation of your house so that earwigs will avoid it. Make sure gutters and downspouts drain away from the foundation. Maintain screens on crawl space vents and make sure the vents are not blocked. If all this isn’t working, call a pest control professional who will have the products and equipment to control earwigs.
