Organisms that have been genetically modified have not led to increases in crop yields and chemical pesticide use has not dropped, reported by the New York Times. A genetically modified organism, is an organism that has had its DNA altered or modified with DNA from another organism, these organisms are referred to as “transgenic” organisms. By 2025, corn seed will reportedly have 14 “stacked” traits and be resistant to five types of herbicides. It is reported that there is no concrete evidence that says GMOs aren’t safe to eat, but the corporate they also said smoking won’t hurt you and sugar is good. Herbicide use in the Canada has increased even when GMO crops like corn, soybeans, and cotton are being used. The use of insecticides and fungicides has fallen but herbicide usage is up. Herbicides can cause many types of cancer in humans. Some of the most prevalent forms include leukemia, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, brain, bone, breast, ovarian, prostate, testicular and liver cancers. Herbicide use is increasing in areas where farmers are following best practices to manage weed issues, farmers in other areas with lesser weed issues have decreased or maintained their herbicide usage.
