Rats and Guinea pigs – great pets

Rats!! Why rats, well they are extremely sociable and clever if they grow up being affectionately touched by their owners. Similar to cats, you pick them up and hold them, place them on your shoulders, and they respond willingly to fondling and care. They also like to play games, learn tricks, and they’re easy to feed because they’ll eat just about anything we do. They are very sociable; in pairs of the same gender they will be extremely happy, although one of the two will always be the leader. But since they are small creatures, young children need to make sure they don’t handle them too roughly. Rats are nocturnal and therefore are most active at night, they tend to pee a lot all over their cages which can become very stinky quickly and they typically only live up to 3 years.
Guinea pigs are kind of like fuzzy rabbits, yet not as big and they are very friendly. They enjoy being held and petted by us and live up to 8 years. Similar to cats, they make a purring sound when they are being held and petted. Guinea pigs make a distinctive wheeking or whistling type sound, often in anticipation of getting a favorite treat or when in need of some attention. They also do what called “popcorning” a hopping action when they are blissful and thrilled. Guinea pigs can be taught to run courses with hurdles, jump up stairs and learn tricks.
