In the US, Honda owners are suing Honda for using soy-based wiring that attracts rodents, and then refusing to repair the vehicles. In one case, the owner of a Honda 2014 CrossTour took his vehicle to the dealer, who found a rabbit still chewing away on wiring. After $765 for the repair, the dealer said the damage was not under warranty, and the owner had to pay. There have been thousands of cases of mice, rats, voles and rabbits that have attacked the wiring under the Honda cars yet Honda refuses to repair the damage under warranty. The owners of 2012-15 models are suing the automaker for “breach of warranty”, claiming the soy-based coatings attract the critters. Soy-based materials are used to coat the wires costs less and are better for the environment because it’s biodegradable. In the law suit the complaints state “Unbeknownst to plaintiffs, however, a real and continuous unintended and undesired consequence of this soy-based insulation material is that it attracts rodents and other animals that are drawn by the soy content of the insulation, and proceed to chew through the insulation and electrical wires that the insulation coats.”
