Kamloops Bans Cosmetic Pesticides

Kamloops City Council votes in favour of a complete ban on cosmetic use of pesticides for residential lawns and ornamental gardens. Effective the beginning of 2016, Kamloops residents will be prevented from using pesticides for cosmetic use although they still are able to spray fruit trees or use pesticides in their gardens or driveways. Interestingly, city operations are not subject to the ban. City officials know this will be a difficult by-law to enforce and will confuse homeowners rather than cut down on pesticide use. Ramifications of such a ban would restrict professional landscaping company from using the same chemicals the residents are restricted from using. Time will tell what kind of backlash occurs in Kamloops before other municipalities consider the same fate as Kamloops.

A cosmetic pesticide is described as a pesticide that is represented, sold, used, or intended for use primarily for the purpose of improving or maintaining an aesthetic quality.
