Skinny mice and Cancer drugs
While conducting a cancer study scientists stumbled on a game-changing weight-loss solution in two common cancer-fighting drugs causing a significant weight loss in obese mice, even when the mice continued excessive consumption of a high-fat diet. Two chemotherapy drugs – methotrexate and cyclophosphamide could be used to completely reverse obesity even in mice without cancer. The weight loss seen in the overweight mice was not as a result of decreased dietary intake or increased activity. Scientists found that the two cancer medications worked together to accelerate loss of excessive weight in mice. The drugs stopped the development of fat cells, leading to a substantial reduction in fat loading. A Canadian health survey, found 29% of Canadians 18 and older were obese and 41% more were overweight. In children and adolescents, 8% were obese and 18% overweight.
