Although summer has passed, I’ve meant to write this one earlier. Slugs can be a big problem in any garden, taking one plant down at a time. The process for getting rid of slugs and snails can be a time consuming and a tedious mission for many gardeners. The best way to get rid of those slimy beasts is slug pellets, but not everyone likes that approach and it can be poisonous to pets and wildlife. Home remedies and natural solutions are not a guaranteed solution but can reduce their numbers. Some plants if grown amongst your fruit and vegetable plants that are a natural repellent to slugs include fennel, anise, and rosemary. Here is a list of tried and true home based solutions.
Petroleum jelly – apply around the rim of your flower pots, containers, and even the stalks of your plants.
Egg shells – crush shells into small pieces and spread around your plants. Snugs don’t like sharp objects and the calcium from the shell is good for the soil.
Nutshells – works the same as egg shell
Coffee grounds – apparently they don’t get a kick from the caffeine and avoid it.
Salt – it works wonders
Beer trap – put a cup of beer out for the slugs, they love it but end up drowning
Copper tape – the mucus secreted or slime reacts with copper producing an electric shock.
Natural predators – make your backyard attractive to slug’s natural predators by building shelters, ponds and bird feeders. These will bring in the slug killers such as birds, beetles and frogs. (And rats, squirrel, skunks and raccoons)
