Some say squirrels are rats with fuzzy tails. Yes they are larger than the average rat and their behavior is not at all like a rat. Squirrels build leaf nests and nests in tree cavities. They may breed twice a year, January and June, and have a 30-45 day gestation. They can have two or three hairless offspring that are weaned at 10-12 weeks. A squirrel can eat upwards of a ½ kilo food a week. The squirrel’s diet consists of birdseed, bulbs, tree buds, frogs, small birds, eggs, insects, fruits, conifer cones, and nuts. They store food in many areas to which they access later. The astonishing memory is a part of this animal’s unbelievable cleverness. It is said that they have the intelligence of a cat.
